Dairy
Murray Goulburn and Saputo have conducted a supplier information roadshow to inform stakeholders of the details of the proposal. Over 1,000 suppliers attended 12 sessions across Victoria, SA, NSW and Tasmania. The next steps are for approval from the ACCC, FIRB and MG Shareholders. An Extraordinary General meeting is to be held for shareholders to vote. The expectation is for the transaction to be completed during the first half of 2018.
Cropping/Sheep
Lamb prices are currently lower than their peak in March/April 2017. Prices in 2017 have been strong despite the production increase of the last 5 years.
Crops are experiencing stress due to excessive rains through November however some are still looking strong.
Pasture growth is good, particularly in the Alpine Valleys and areas south of the Hume Highway.
Beef
Local beef markets in Echuca and Shepparton were buoyed by the presence of a feed lot buyer from Toowoomba QLD during November. This buyer operated at both fat and store sales and targeted well-bred steers and heifer yearlings in good condition.
In the past twelve months a number of farmers have commenced transitioning from dairy to beef.
Horticulture
Rains are creating a concern for fruit growers.
Irrigation
There was again a steady decline in temporary water prices (around 10%) through this month however the permanent price has increased around the same amount.
