Regional Round-up is a monthly newsletter providing an overview into the environmental and business conditions affecting farmers and rural businesses in the Goulburn Valley and North East Victoria.
Dairy
Most dairy farmers in the area, especially to the west of Shepparton, have started irrigation and silage making. Several are on their third irrigation for the season. The recent dry period and poor rainfall outlook has many dairy farmers worried about a less than average spring season, with pastures going to head already in northern areas.
Spring calving is well underway however rainfall dominates discussions.
Milk prices remain unchanged from the past month and milk volume is better than this time last year, as conditions are not as wet.
Cropping/Sheep
A number of crops in the Riverina area are failing due to late frosts and lack of soil moisture. Crops in north eastern Victoria generally looking good, however the dry period in recent weeks is likely to affect yields.
Beef
Prices are yet to stablise as they continue to decline. Poor rainfall continues to drive this as pastures are not offering the green feed typical of September.
Horticulture
With pruning season complete, this month orchardists are preparing for the season ahead. They expect picker numbers to be down. A lack of rain remains an issue and irrigation has already commenced.
Mice numbers in the western part of the region remains a concern for cereal growers. There is concern that a plague is imminent west of the Campaspe River.
Irrigation
With irrigation already in full swing, it is encouraging to see high allocation announcements.
